Electrochemical approaches for chemical and biological analysis on Mars.

Obtaining in situ chemical data from planetary bodies such as Mars or Europa can present significant challenges. The one analytical technique that has many of the requisite characteristics to meet such a challenge is electroanalysis. Described here are three electroanalytical devices designed for in situ geochemical and biological analysis on Mars. The Mars Environmental Compatibility Assessmen...

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) Mission

The MAVEN spacecraft launched in November 2013, arrived at Mars in September 2014, and completed commissioning and began its one-Earth-year primary science mission in November 2014. The orbiter’s science objectives are to explore the interactions of the Sun and the solar wind with the Mars magnetosphere and upper atmosphere, to determine the structure of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere and ...

Evolution of the Martian Atmosphere: Results of a Monte Carlo Model of Sputtering

Using a Monte-Carlo model, we determine the sputtering yields for the upper atmosphere of Mars at three different epochs (the present, -2.5 Gyr ago and -3.5 Gyr ago). The carbon yield increases from 1 at 3.5 Gyr ago to 2 at present. These yields imply that sputtering is a major loss process for COz, especially during the early history of the solar system. Over the same period, the yield of oxyg...

Evolution of the Climate System of Mars: Effects of Obliquity Change

Introduction: Greenhouse effect of CO2 may have been the most important factor for the Martian surface environment throughout the history of Mars. Polar ice caps and surface regolith are considered to be large CO2 reservoirs to exchange CO2 with the atmosphere on the Mars (atmosphere-ice caps-regolith (AIR) system). In this respect, Mars has an essentially different climate system from that of ...

Water as a Clue to the Evolution of the Atmosphere and Climate History of Mars: Evidence for Circum-polar/non-polar Ice Deposits, Running Water and Standing Bodies of Water in the History of Mars

I. Introduction: Water is a key guide to understanding the history of the atmosphere and climate of Mars [1]. Geological evidence that illustrates the state of water (solid or liquid) and its distribution at various stages in the history of Mars is essential in documenting this history. In this analysis, evidence for the recent climate record in the polar cap is assessed, and non-polar ice depo...
